How is HRA exemption calculated?

HRA exemption is the MINIMUM of: (1) Actual HRA received, (2) 50% of Basic+DA for metro cities or 40% for non-metro cities, (3) Rent paid minus 10% of Basic+DA. The lowest amount among these three is your exempt HRA.

Which cities are considered Metro for HRA?

Only 4 cities are classified as Metro for HRA calculation: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. All other cities including Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune are considered Non-Metro.

Can I claim HRA if I live in my own house?

No, HRA exemption is only available if you pay rent. If you live in your own house or don't pay rent, the entire HRA received becomes taxable.

Is HRA available under the New Tax Regime?

No, HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is only available under the Old Tax Regime. Under the New Regime, HRA received is fully taxable.
