Frequently Asked Questions

What is NPS?

NPS (National Pension System) is a government-sponsored retirement savings scheme. It invests in a mix of equity, corporate bonds, and government securities. At retirement, you must use at least 40% of the corpus to buy an annuity for monthly pension.

How much tax can I save with NPS?

NPS offers tax benefits under three sections: 80CCD(1) up to Rs 1.5 lakh (part of 80C limit), 80CCD(1B) additional Rs 50,000, and 80CCD(2) for employer contribution (up to 10% of basic, no upper limit for government employees).

What happens to NPS at retirement?

At retirement (age 60), you must use at least 40% of the corpus to purchase an annuity. The remaining 60% can be withdrawn as a lump sum, which is fully tax-free. You can also defer withdrawal or continue contributing till age 75.

Is NPS better than PPF?

NPS has higher return potential due to equity exposure (up to 75%) but is market-linked. PPF offers guaranteed returns at 7.1%. NPS has a mandatory annuity component, while PPF gives full flexibility. Both serve different purposes and work best together.

Can I withdraw NPS before 60?

Partial withdrawal of up to 25% of contributions is allowed after 3 years for specific purposes (education, marriage, medical emergency, home purchase). Full premature exit requires at least 80% to be used for annuity purchase.
