What is PPF?

PPF (Public Provident Fund) is a government-backed long-term savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in. It offers tax-free returns and qualifies for Section 80C deduction up to Rs 1.5 lakh per year.

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The PPF interest rate is reviewed quarterly by the government. For Q1 FY 2025-26, it is 7.1% per annum, compounded annually.

Can I withdraw PPF before 15 years?

Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th year onwards. Full premature closure is permitted after 5 years only under specific conditions like life-threatening illness or higher education.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) status. The investment qualifies for 80C deduction, the interest earned is tax-free, and the maturity amount is also tax-free.

What happens after 15 years?

After 15 years, you can either withdraw the full amount, extend the account for 5 more years with deposits, or extend without deposits. You can keep extending in 5-year blocks indefinitely.
